Ben & Teller is the second episode of the second season of Quantum Leap, and the twentieth episode of the series overall. It first aired on October 11, 2023.
Summary[]
Ben takes on the role of a bank teller in the wrong place at the wrong time during a dangerous armed robbery. In the present Addison, Magic, Ian and Jenn come to terms with a shocking discovery. The Quantum Leap team adds a new member.
Synopsis[]
Having found Ben, Ian re-assembles the team. He finds Jenn working as a card shark, and they both find Magic shopping for anniversary jewelry. Ian explains that Ben jumping into the accelerator as a host disrupted Ziggy's ability to predict and control the leap. They found Ben by sneaking in after the government shut down the program to leave one computer running to search for him. Ian also explains that no time has passed for Ben.
May 9, 1986: Ben leaps into bank teller Lorena Chaves as he processes that three years have passed in the present. Lorena is friendly with the assistant manager, Rebecca. Rebecca's ne'er-do-well brother, Sean, turns up and participates in a robbery.
In the present, Addison is working as a tactical trainer with her boyfriend, Tom. Tom tells her they found Ben. Addison wonders whether to return, and Tom tells her to follow her heart.
Ian serves as hologram, and says that eight people die in the robbery, and Ben should get the robbers to leave immediately because the cops are on the way. They refuse. Ian also says the whole team is together, except Addison, who they think will arrive soon.
The police arrive, and Ben persuades them to let him answer the phone as an intermediary. He also persuades them to release two hostages, an injured guard and a hyperventilating pregnant woman. Robbing the tellers only yields $8,500, and the robbers realize the real money is in the vault. They interrogate the bank manager, but he faints. Rebecca claims not to have the code, and she is almost shot. Ben says he knows the code, relying on Ziggy to help. Jenn finds the code, and Ben enters four of the five numbers before the FBI enters PQL and shuts down Ian's hologram. Ben succesfully guesses the last digit on the last try.
Tom arrives at the project with Addison and pulls rank on the FBI agent. The team is very warm with Tom, and he leaves to deal with bureaucratic fallout. Addison says she won't take her old job on the project, and everyone understands. Addison is moved by seeing Ben operate in the leap onscreen, but declines to interrupt Ian's participation in the leap. Ian tells Ben Addison is here, but she doesn't want to swap mid-leap. Ben is visibly affected, which causes Addison to reconsider her decision.
Back in the leap, Rebecca laments her deteriorating relationship with her brother. With the money from the vault, the robbers reveal their plan to demand a chopper to escape. Ben relays the demand to the detective, and he promises to look into it. Ian tells him that the police have no intention of meeting the demands, and will assault the bank, killing everyone in a gas explosion.
Ben finds out from Rebecca that a supply closet has an exterior wall that is just drywall because of an abandoned expansion. Ben points out to the robbers that snipers are outside, which leads them to put the hostages in the conference room that has the closet. Ben and Rebecca cut open the wall and allow the hostages to escape. Rebecca and Ben remain in the room. The leader of the robbers is about to shoot Rebecca, but Sean shoots him in the back. The police storm the bank and arrest Sean, even though Rebecca claims she pulled the trigger. Ian says that Sean didn't let Rebecca take the charge, but gets a light sentence. Sean and Rebecca reconcile.
Addison tries to absorb the day's events with Jenn. Ben's death was the darkest period of her life, and Tom was the only thing that gave her the strength to go on. Jenn makes her realize that she wants to get back in there, and she tells Tom she can't just walk away. He understands, and has confidence in their relationship. Addison enters the imaging chamber. Ben expresses sympathy with what she must have gone through when he was gone, but expects a joyous reunion. He then reads Addison's face, immediately understands, and his heart is broken. Addison whispers "please forgive me" as he leaps.
In the present, Jenn tells Ian that they need to tell Magic and Addison about the shady aspect of the way they found Ben.
