Dr. Ben Song is a brilliant quantum physicist who assembles a new team to restart Project Quantum Leap and understand the mysteries behind the machine and the man behind it. However, when Ben uses the Project Accelerator and takes an unauthorized trip to the past, his team has to solve the mystery of why he used the machine in the first place. During Ben's leaps, his constant companion is Addison Augustine, who appears to him in the form of a hologram that only he can see and hear.

Ben Song is portrayed by Raymond Lee in the new NBC Quantum Leap series.

Biography[]

Ben Song was born in South Korea but he emigrated to the United States at age 9 along with his mother. [1] His mom died of a brain aneurysm when he was 15[2], and Ben was the one who found her dead on the floor. [3] They were living in New York City in 1989, placing his birthdate between 1974 and 1980. A leap to 1977 is described as beyond his lifetime[4], meaning he is born between 1977 and 1980.

He later went on to become a Quantum Physicist and joined the Quantum Leap Project where he met Herbert "Magic" Williams, Ian Wright, Jenn Chou, and Addison Augustine.

In 2018, he and Addison became a couple and later went on to become engaged in 2022.

In 2021 or 2022 a future version of Ian Wright leapt back to inform Ben of a conspiracy where another leaper from the future was sent to kill Addison in an attempt to prevent an apocalyptic future. Because of a mole in the program, Ben worked independently of the project, instead turning to Janis Calavicci, one of the daughters of Albert Calavicci. The two conspired to have Ben leap instead of Addison to save her life. Ben's window to leap was during his and Addison's engagement party, and he left to go back to HQ and enter the Project Accelerator.

According to Janis and Ben's calculations, Ben would only need 18 leaps before he would be able to go home. This proved not to be the case, and instead he vanished. They searched for him for two years before the Pentagon abandoned the search, and he was declared legally deceased in 2025. A funeral was held in his honor and Ian Wright sang "Amazing Grace" at the service. Ben reappeared in 2026 when Ziggy's tracking system finally managed to locate him in Russia in 1978.

For everyone in the present three years had passed, but for Ben it had only been a single leap. Addison had to break off their engagement due to a relationship she began after he had been declared dead, a relationship that later ended. Ben and Addison remained close.

Ben developed an unconventional romance with Hannah Carson, who he encountered on six different leaps covering 27 years of her life. Although he initially views the leaps as a trial he is enduring for a specific purpose, he eventually appreciates the gift of being able to help people across time, in spite of the sacrifice involved.

Thanks to Hannah's intervention, Addison was able to join Ben on a leap. They are now physically reunited though their relationship status is unknown.[2]

Personality[]

Ben is an introvert who doesn't like parties or public speaking.

Ben is decent to a fault, nearly always seeing the good in people and seeking to change their hearts. He also has a reckless streak, often endangering himself with a poorly thought-out plan in order the maximize the good he achieves in a leap.

  • He has a photographic memory.
  • He is known to speak English, Korean[5], Romanian[6], Cantonese[7], Russian[8], German[9], and Spanish[10].
