Salvation or Bust is the fifth episode of the first season of Quantum Leap, and the fifth episode of the series overall. It first aired on October 17, 2022.

Summary

Ben is transported back to 1879 and the rustic, frontier town of Salvation, where he must take on a deadly outlaw. Magic, Jenn and Ian face a new threat when a curious senator shows up at headquarters asking a lot of questions about the Quantum Leap program.

Synopsis

1879: Ben leaps into Diego de la Cruz, an aged former gunslinger, summoned by his granddaughter to Salvation, an Old West town on the verge of destruction by a railroad company. He encounters a dangerous outlaw gang hired by the railroad to drive the townsfolk out. Addison informs him that he has to beat the leader of the gang, Josiah McDonough, in a classic western showdown to save the town and leap.

Ben, who is anti-gun, attempts to overcome his moral impasse by practicing shooting. However, being unable to hit is target, Ben instead rallies the townsfolk to rig a series of traps for McDonough and his gang so they can collect a large bounty which would save the town and allow them to mine a nearby copper vein Addison informs Ben will keep the town financially flush for years to come.

Before Ben leaps, he and Addison are surprised by a man in the town who knows Ben's real name and reveals he knows Ben is a leaper from 2022 and warns Ben to stop following him.

With Janis having infiltrated Ziggy, Magic frees Addison to jog Ben’s memory in an effort to figure out the plan he made with Janis. Addison flirts with Ben and answers his questions about their relationship, including the story of their first date.

Meanwhile, in 2022, the PQL team receives a surprise visit from Congresswoman Kavita Adani, who sits on the project's oversight committee. The team tries to keep her from figuring out that Ben made an unauthorized leap. However, she does and Magic convinces her to keep the project running by promising to find a way to save her brother from a fatal car accident in the past in which she was the driver.

Trivia

• It is never revealed what State the town of Salvation is in but it is clearly in the Southwestern United States. It is assumed to be California since Salvation had its heyday during the Gold Rush. This is also a rare instance where the year is given but not the exact date.
• Salvation, Texas is also a fictional town from the DC Comics Vertigo imprint Preacher comic books.
• The episode ends with Ben encountering another Leaper. The character is credited as "The Leaper".
• In The Boogieman, Sam initially thinks he has leaped to 1879 based on the publication date of a book he is reading. In this episode, Ben really does leap to 1879.
